Information

The Penn State Blue Band will be holding auditions for the Touch of Blue on Sunday, March 12, 2017There will be no fall auditions for the Touch of Blue squad.

Please read the following information carefully before submitting an Intent to Audition form.

Eligibility

All applicants must be accepted to the Pennsylvania State University, University Park campus location, to be eligible for auditions.

A student currently at freshman level attending classes at a Penn State Commonwealth Campus (not University Park), having finished their first academic year, could possibly transfer to University Park. You must provide verification from you current academic advisor indicating you are academically on track for the standard change of campus to University Park at the conclusion of the Spring semester prior to the Fall marching band season for which you are auditioning.

  • All prospective candidates must be able to audition in person at Penn State University Park on the published audition day. No exceptions
  • You must have confirmed Penn State student status by the announced audition date in order to be considered in the Touch of Blue Twirler auditions for that year. Confirmed student status is defined as: Accepted offer of admission to Penn State University Park campus and paid deposit (paid/accept). No exceptions
  • All prospective candidates must meet the applicable eligibility requirements described above by the date of the audition. Eligibility requirements must be verifiable by the Blue Band office. No exceptions
  • All prospective candidates must file an Intent to Audition. No exceptions

    All prospective candidates are expected to provide accurate information and are responsible for updating the Blue Band office with any change in academic status or campus status. Providing inaccurate or misleading information at any stage of the audition process will be cause to cancel the student's participation in auditions and/or void the student's audition results.

Preparation

You do not need to prepare an individual routine. All Audition routines are taught during the instructional session. We look for talented performers who can learn routines quickly, with uniformity of style conforming to the Blue Band Majorettes style. Candidates for Touch of Blue positions will need EQUALLY strong ability in Twirling, Marching, and Dance.

Interview

The interview portion of the audition will allow the candidate to demonstrate Interpersonal Skills to the judging panel.

Equipment

You will need to bring two batons.

Attire

Instructional Sessions: Shorts, t-shirt or tank top, and twirling sneakers. Hair should be pulled back.
Auditions: Solid black, bathing suit style leotard (appropriate for audition atmosphere), tights, and twirling sneakers. Hair should be styled up and makeup appropriate for the field.

Judges

We will have a minimum of three judges. Judges are selected on the following criteria:

  • Former Touch of Blue Twirler
  • Blue Band Affiliate (ie: Band Director, Band Front Coordinator, Assistant Director)
  • NBTA, DMA, or USTA Judging License

Timeline

Instructional sessions and auditions are CLOSED to the public.

8:00–8:15 am Report time and check in
8:15–11:30 am Introductions, stretching, and instructional session
11:30 am–12:30 pm Lunch
12:30–3:00 pm Instructional/Review Session
3:00–4:00 pm Prepare for auditions
4:00 pm Auditions begin

Based on the number of auditionees, the judges may deem it necessary to have preliminary cuts prior to making final decisions. The number of Twirlers accepted, for any given year, will vary according to the talent level demonstrated in the auditions. The auditions are based on the quality of the candidate's performance in each category.

There are no scholarships available for majorettes who perform with the Blue Band.
